How to choose the best backtesting software
The best backtesting software is the one that matches how you trade, not the one with the longest feature list. Use this short guide after the comparison table to narrow tools by workflow, coding level and budget.
Match the tool to your workflow
If you mainly practise discretionary setups, prioritise manual market replay, TradingView-style charts and a clear journal. Dedicated replay platforms and journal-first tools usually fit better than heavy quant stacks.
If you validate rule-based ideas without writing code, look for a visual Strategy Tester and clear performance stats. If you already code in MQL5, Pine Script or NinjaScript, start with the platform that runs that language natively.
Manual replay vs automatic strategy testing
Manual backtesting is chart practice: you step through history, place simulated trades and review decisions. Automatic backtesting runs entry and exit rules across historical bars and returns win rate, drawdown and related metrics.
Neither approach replaces the other. Replay builds execution habits. Automatic tests stress-check rules faster. Pick the primary job first, then compare secondary features like analytics, broker sync or AI helpers.
What to verify before you subscribe
Check free-plan limits, history depth, markets unlocked, session caps and whether Bar Replay or tick data requires a paid tier. Confirm current prices on the vendor site, because public plan cards change often.
Then read each profile for strengths, drawbacks and who the tool is not ideal for. Our BBS Score is a starting point based on hands-on testing and eight evaluation categories, not a substitute for trying a free plan or trial yourself.

How we score
The BBS Score is an editorial average of eight categories. Use it as a starting point, not a substitute for reading each profile.
Read the methodology- 01
Backtest realism
Backtesting should not be a simple bar replay. We look for tools that replicate live trading: order handling, risk controls, spreads/costs where relevant, and a practice loop that feels close to real execution.
- 02
Real cost
We do not only look at the sticker price. We evaluate what each plan actually covers and whether that access is enough to test your strategies properly, without hidden limits that block real research.
- 03
Market coverage
Assets supported and years of available history matter. Comfortable edge testing needs enough markets and depth of data, not a thin sample that looks fine in a demo and fails in practice.
- 04
Interface and ease of use
We value a polished interface that is easy to understand from day one. A clearer workflow makes daily backtesting more pleasant and reduces the friction that kills consistency.
- 05
Bugs and smoothness
Features look great on a marketing page. More important is whether those features work well on a daily basis: stable sessions, reliable charts, and fewer interruptions when you are in the middle of practice.
- 06
Provided tools
Core backtesting tools count heavily: TradingView charts where offered, indicators, draggable stop loss and take profit, multi-chart layouts, and the other essentials of a serious practice workspace.
- 07
Added tools
Extras such as AI, live journaling, mobile apps and similar suite features can be valuable, but they are not the priority for everyone who mainly wants to backtest. We weigh them as useful add-ons, not as the core score.
- 08
Support and assistance
We have not personally tested every support team end to end. To make the evaluation more complete, we review what real users report about help quality, response times and problem resolution.
